In a 100-person boutique investment bank—we faced this common, misguided assurance.  We know that building a productive workforce and addressing cultural shifts are crucial, even when leadership makes promises of stability.


Challenge

Incorporating this investment bank into our organization involved addressing:

  • Employee Uncertainty: The “nothing will change” message left employees with doubts, and we recognized that addressing these fears was essential for creating a productive environment.

  • Rapid Workforce Integration: We aimed to establish a strong and cohesive team quickly, despite initial uncertainties about fit and function within our structure.

  • Cultural Alignment: Bringing together the boutique bank’s Midwestern team with our New York-based headquarters required sensitivity and intentional bridging of different work cultures.


Our Approach

To navigate these challenges, we took a proactive, human-centered approach:

  1. Building Trust from the Start: During due diligence, we spent substantial time with the acquisition's leadership, assuring them they had a dedicated contact to guide them through the process and answer any questions.

  2. Leadership Coaching: As the closing date approached, we provided comprehensive coaching to the new leadership team, focusing on how they would fit into our organization—not just where. We prepared them for both operational and cultural shifts.

  3. Connecting with All Team Members: To create a welcoming environment, we made multiple visits to the boutique bank’s offices, engaging with junior employees and helping them understand the benefits of joining our firm. These visits helped foster trust and created a bridge between the New York and Midwestern teams.


Results

Our deliberate approach led to a smooth and successful integration:

  • Low Attrition: By addressing uncertainties head-on and providing consistent support, we retained most of the talent within the acquired team.
