The job market is tough right now.

It's tempting to apply to every posting you see on LinkedIn or company websites—but the reality is that thousands of job seekers are doing the exact same thing. Even with AI tools, recruiters face an overwhelming challenge in identifying the right candidates. That means there’s a very real chance your résumé may never even be seen.

Networking, as I’ve written before, remains the most effective way to secure opportunities at every level.

Building a network can be energizing, surprisingly easy, and extremely impactful.

This week, a client shared a story that illustrates this perfectly. He’s been networking for a summer role between his graduate school years and has spent time reaching out to professionals on LinkedIn. Many people at his target companies have been open to quick calls or coffee chats.

Recently, he messaged a fellow alumnus at a target company. The response? A direct link to a job posting. On a follow-up call, the alumnus encouraged him to consider the role—either now or upon graduation—and is now introducing him to senior leadership.

Meanwhile, LinkedIn shows that 204 people have already applied for the position, many struggling to stand out.

Networking moved my client to the front of the line. That’s the power of building relationships: it gives you visibility no application portal can match.
